This research aims to investigate how people respond to reading about street crime in Britain. In particular, we are interested in examining individuals’ reactions to the crime reported, including their perceptions of the crime, their emotions towards the victim and the crime, and how the crime may impact upon their future actions.
What’s being asked of me?
You will read an article about a street crime that has recently been reported in a local newspaper. This particular article has been chosen as it is typical of many of the articles that appear in the media on a daily basis. After reading the article, you will be asked a variety of questions concerning your reactions to the crime you have read about. You will then answer some short questions concerning your own experiences of being a victim of certain types of crime and a selection of demographic questions. The study should take around 5-10 minutes to complete.
What’s in it for me?
Your participation will help better understand the effects of the way criminal activity is reported in the media. There will also be a £25 prize draw for all participants. To be entered into the draw, please send an email to wpt20@sussex.ac.uk with your contact information. After the study finishes, the winner will be contacted and payment arranged.
What will happen to my data?
All information collected will be kept strictly confidential. Respondents will remain completely anonymous. You can withdraw from the study at any point without any explanation. As the study is anonymous, however, it will not be possible to withdraw your responses once you have finished the survey and submitted your answers.
The Research is from the University of Sussex and includes Professor Rupert Brown (Psychology), and William Teasley(Psychology). This research has received ethical approval from the University of Sussex Sciences & Technology Cross-Schools Research Ethics Committee (crecscitec@sussex.ac.uk).
